IU School of Medicine Reports Possible Data Breach of 3,192 Patients' Records

The theft of a password-protected laptop from a physician at the Indiana University School of Medicine may have caused a data breach, according to an IU School of Medicine news release.

The laptop of a physician in the school's department of surgery contained the name, age, sex, diagnosis and medical record number of 3,192 individuals, 178 of whom also had their Social Security number on the laptop. The information was being used for research.

The laptop was stolen from the physician's vehicle on Aug. 16, according to the report. Although the computer was password-protected, it is possible that someone accessed the information.
