IT Experts, ONC Developing Measures for Testing EHR Usability

The National Institute for Standards and Technology will develop procedures for objectively evaluating the usability of electronic health records and other health IT, according to a Government Health IT news report.

Meanwhile, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT will also be developing guidelines to measure EHR usability. The coordinated move toward a standard measurement for EHR usability stems from provider concerns that the EHR they purchase may be difficult to adopt, which could affect productivity and patient safety.

"All too often we hear from providers that they look forward to the day when the technology works for them instead of them working for the technology," said National Coordinator Farzad Mostashari, MD.

A separate project at the University of Texas, the SHARP-C Project led by Jiajie Zhang, also seeks to establish measures of EHR effectiveness, according to the news report.
