In 2012, Sun Microsystems co-founder Vinod Khosla predicted that computers will replace 80 percent of physicians. A recently released FDA database has begun to track how much progress is being made on that prediction, Politico reported Oct. 6.
The FDA compiled a database of every medical device it has approved that uses artificial intelligence. Below are three insights from the database.
- One hundred AI devices were approved in 2020 amid the pandemic.
- The number of AI devices approved by the FDA has been rising each year since 2016. From 2010-15, the number of AI devices approved each year was in the single digits.
- The top five clinical areas with AI devices approved by the FDA since 1997 are radiology (241 devices), cardiology (41 devices), hematology (13 devices), neurology (12 devices) and ophthalmology (six devices).
