Interoperability Group Standardizes Connections for EHRs, Health Information Exchanges

Staff -
The EHR/HIE Interoperability Workgroup has released a set of technical specifications to standardize connections between healthcare providers, health information exchanges and other "data-sharing partners," according to a workgroup news release.

The workgroup aims to employ the standardized, easy-to-use set of connections to increase adoption of electronic health records and HIEs. The workgroup based the connection standards on existing interoperability standards published by the Office of the National Coordinator.

The first set of specifications involves two use cases — Statewide Send and Receive Patient Record Exchange and Statewide Patient Data Inquiry Service Use Case — and the detailed data and metadata specification for a compliant Continuity of Care Document.

The workgroup includes the New York eHealth Collaborative and similar organizations in California, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Oregon; eight EHR vendors; and three HIE services vendors.
