Intel sites in Washington, New Mexico may close

Last week, Intel said it plans to cut 11 percent of its global workforce, which equates to approximately 12,000 jobs. Now Intel employees in Washington and New Mexico are concerned about the future of their jobs, according to The Oregonian and The Denver Post.

Intel's site in DuPont, Wash., is likely facing closures. "Intel has informed us that they will be closing their operations in DuPont," Mayor Mike Courts wrote in an email to The Oregonian. "I do not have a precise timeline yet." The site, which opened in 1996, transferred 350 workers to other locations in 2013.

Intel was not available for comment, according to the report.

Intel employees in New Mexico are also facing uncertainty. The company's facility in Rio Rancho has been in operation since 1980, and it currently employs 1,900 workers. "Intel is one of the most important companies, not just for Rio Rancho, but for the state of New Mexico. They create the types of jobs we want," said Terri Cole, president and CEO of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, according to the report. "Any talk of job cuts makes us all uneasy."

Natasha Martell Jackson, a spokeswoman for Intel in Rio Rancho, said the company was not commenting on locations of job cuts.

The Denver Post reported that Intel job cuts may also occur in Oregon, Arizona and California.
