Intel collaborates with Facebook on computer chip for AI

Intel plans to ship what it calls the tech industry's "first neural network processor," called the Intel Nervana Neural Network Processor, by the end of 2017, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich wrote in a company blog post Oct. 17.

The Intel Nervana NNP computer chip aims to "revolutionize [artificial intelligence] computing across [a] myriad [of] industries," according to Mr. Krzanich. He added the company is in "close collaboration" with Facebook, which is sharing technical insight with Intel to support the company's efforts to build AI hardware.

With the computer chip, companies will be able to develop AI applications that leverage massive amounts of data processing. In healthcare, AI innovations will improve the timeliness and accuracy of diagnosis and push forward research on complex conditions, according to Mr. Krzanich.
