Infographic: 4 ways EHRs act as hurdles to providers, from athenahealth's Let Doctors Be Doctors campaign

Staff -

Launched in October, athenahealth's Let Doctors Be Doctors campaign focuses on calling attention to the negative impact the current state of EHRs has on the patient-physician relationship. A music video from physician-turned-rapper ZDoggMD that coincided with the announcement of the program put many of those complaints to verse, calling EHRs glorified billing systems and outlining the ways they add hours to provider workloads and impede care delivery.

So far, the LDBD campaign has engaged 6 million people, including more than 700 posts from individual physicians relating to their EHR struggles. That response is documented in a new infographic from the campaign.

Here are the top four ways that EHRs are hurdles, according to survey respondents:

  • 53 percent of physicians feel they are dedicating time to treating computers, rather than patients
  • 80 percent of registered nurses spend excessive amounts of time on EHR-related administrative tasks
  • 20 percent of providers said EHRs are a great enough source of burnout that they'd considering quitting
  • 28 percent said the technology's greatest shortcoming is that it is difficult to use, followed by collecting useless data and lack of interoperability
