Staff -

The Indiana State Medical Association is notifying patients after two archive backup hard drives containing group health and life insurance databases were stolen.

The theft occurred Feb. 13 when an ISMA employee was transporting the hard drives to an offsite storage location. ISMA discovered and reported the theft to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department the same day.

ISMA reports the theft affects 39,090 individuals, though to different degrees. While all affected patients had names, addresses, birth dates, email addresses and health plan numbers compromised, some had either medical information and Social Security numbers or both compromised, as well.

Currently, ISMA has no knowledge of use or attempted use of exposed information, according to the notification.
