The website, CareINSight, was developed by the IHA using data reported to the CMS and the Indiana Department of Public Health. Besides the prices, the website also lists data about hospital evaluations and performance. The data measures include patient satisfaction, readmission, infections, deaths, birthing outcomes and hospital discharges, according to CareINSight.

Designed to increase transparency, the website also explains the hospital billing process, how claims are sent to CMS and what each section of a claim means. Users can also compare hospitals across Indiana for prices on common procedures.

Indiana hospitals treated 3.2 million people in their emergency departments, 14.7 million people in outpatient facilities and admitted 731,000 patients in 2012, according to the website.

“We believe that making quality and charge data available and useful to the public leads to more informed patients and more confidence in the healthcare system,” the website reads. “We will continue working with other stakeholders to bring even greater transparency to healthcare.”
