Independence Blue Cross to cover telemedicine visits

Staff -

Health plan members of Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia are now covered for telemedicine visits. The payer is offering telemedicine coverage in hopes to make healthcare more convenient and accessible.

Interested members have two options for telemedicine consultations. First, they can receive telemedicine consultations with their primary care providers if the provider offers telemedicine services. Second, Independence Blue Cross partnered with telemedicine vendor MDLIVE to offer 24/7 access to board-certified primary care physicians, which members can use if their employer offers this benefit.

"Telemedicine is emerging as a consumer-preferred channel, and we're pleased to offer our members the opportunity to take advantage of communicating more quickly and easily with their doctors through a secure video on their cell phone, iPad or other digital device," said Daniel Hilferty, president and CEO of Independence Blue Cross. "These virtual visits won't replace the important relationships our members have with their primary care physicians, but rather expand the options for access to convenient, timely healthcare."
