IBM wins blockchain patent

Mackenzie Garrity -

IBM was granted a patent in November to use blockchain technology in order to prevent drones from stealing delivered packages, according to Coindesk.

The tech giant will develop a sensor that will be triggered if a package exceeds an altitude threshold after it has been delivered. Then, the sensor will give updates on the blockchain platform.

"The confluence of the increase in drone use and the increase in online shopping provides a situation in which a drone may be used with nefarious intent to anonymously take a package that is left on a doorstep after delivery," the patent says, according to Coindesk.

It's unclear if this is a sign IBM is getting into the drone delivery service area.
