IBM publishes 'Get the Facts' webpage after STAT investigation

IBM Watson Health released a fact sheet titled "Watson and Cancer: Get the Facts" Sept. 5, following a STAT investigation claiming Watson for Oncology underwhelmed hospitals and oncologists.

In the STAT investigation, writers Casey Ross and Ike Swetlitz asserted Watson for Oncology hasn't met the high expectations developers at IBM laid out, citing a lack of peer-reviewed papers and a tendency to present recommendations already flagged by providers.

"The interviews suggest that IBM, in its rush to bolster flagging revenue, unleashed a product without fully assessing the challenges of deploying it in hospitals globally," Mr. Ross and Mr. Swetlitz wrote.

IBM's "Get the Facts" webpage highlighted feedback from hospital clients and former patients, alongside perspectives from physicians, researchers and industry stakeholders. The clinical decision support technology operates at more than 50 hospitals in five continents and has supported 14,000 people, according to IBM.

"When you consider our Watson for Oncology's global adoption, initial concordance studies, thousands of patient cases processed and our patient and physician testimonials, there is no question that we are having a positive impact on oncology care around the world," the fact sheet reads.
