IBM holds most patents in cloud tech for 23rd year running

Despite reporting its 14th consecutive quarter of falling revenues in October, IBM received the most U.S. patents in 2015 for the 23rd year in a row, beating out Google, Microsoft, Intel and Samsung.

Of the 7,355 patents IBM was awarded in 2015, more than 2,000 were related to its cloud and cognitive computing arm, Watson. Despite the company's financial concerns, it seems to show no signs of slowing its investment in cloud computing and big data services.

"During IBM's 23 years atop the patent list, the company's inventors have received more than 88,000 U.S. patents," Ginni Rometty, CEO, president and chairman of IBM said in a statement. "IBM's investments in R&D continue to shape the future of computing through cognitive computing and the cloud platform that will help our clients drive transformation across multiple industries."
