How Nuance's AI boosts both patient and physician experience: 5 notes

In collaboration with Nuance -

The pandemic continues to reinforce the need to improve the patient-physician experience, quality of care and financial outcomes, with artificial intelligence-powered solutions shown to do so.

During Becker's Physician Leadership Virtual forum, "The Era of AI-Rich Healthcare," Jared Pelo, MD, chief medical information officer at Burlington, Mass.-based Nuance, discussed how AI‑powered solutions can help remove administrative burdens for providers by capturing clinical information and applying real-time intelligence for better decision-making across the continuum of care.

Five key takeaways:

1. COVID-19 has only exacerbated physician burnout, cash flow/budget challenges and resource constraints, Dr. Pelo explained. Nuance's Dragon Ambient eXperience works to mitigate all three of these issues.

2. Innovated by Nuance and Microsoft, the Dragon Ambient eXperience securely and automatically captures patient encounters through conversational recording. The recording goes to the Nuance cloud hosted on Microsoft Azure. Instead of just a transcript, the documentation is a well-written narrative of the conversation that includes discrete data needed for both the business and clinical aspects of care.

3. Patient experience improves with use of the Dragon Ambient eXperience, according to Dr. Pelo. The technology allows providers to connect face-to-face with patients instead of typing and looking at a screen. According to a York, Pa.-based WellSpan Health Patient satisfaction survey representing 60 individual patient encounters by two family medicine physicians, 97 percent of patients said their physician was more focused and engaged using the Dragon Ambient eXperience.

4. On average, providers save six minutes per patient encounter using the technology, compared to previous use of speech capture, scribes and transcriptions, Dr. Pelo said. Before using the solution, 72 percent of providers surveyed reported burnout and fatigue, while only 17 percent reported burnout and fatigue while using it. The majority (85 percent) of physicians across all specialties would recommend Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience to a colleague, according to Dr. Pelo.

5. The solution provides a consistent and personalized clinical documentation experience across solutions, platforms and devices, regardless of physical location, Dr. Pelo said. Additional benefits include increased accuracy, operating efficiency and throughput; improved quality of care; and an accelerated revenue cycle.
