Jessica Kim Cohen -

The majority of internet users in the United States don't understand important cybersecurity concepts and terms, according to a Pew Research Center report.

To compile the report, titled What the Public Knows About Cybersecurity, researchers analyzed the responses of 1,055 adult internet users in the United States who took an online cybersecurity knowledge quiz in June 2016. The median respondent answered five of the 13 questions correctly.

Here are five of Pew Research Center's findings.

1. Can identify the most secure password from a list of four options: 75 percent

2. Can identify a phishing attack from a set of three examples: 54 percent

3. Can define the term "ransomware": 48 percent

4. Can define the term "botnet": 16 percent

5. Can identify an example of two-step authentication from a list of options: 10 percent

"Cybersecurity is a complicated and diverse subject, but these questions cover many of the general concepts and basic building blocks that cybersecurity experts stress are important for users to protect themselves online," according to Pew Research Center.
