HIMSS15 guidebook: What to expect from the year's biggest health IT event

HIMSS is coming to Chicago next week for the HIMSS 15 Annual Conference & Exhibition from April 12 – 16, the biggest industry event of the year.

With more than 35,000 IT professionals and more than 1,200 exhibitors, there will be no shortage of ideas, topics and discussion. Here's a brief preview of what to expect in the upcoming week.

1. xG Health, a company spun out of Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System, plans to unveil a new care management platform at the conference. Here, Earl Steinberg, MD, MPP, CEO of xG Health, and Marcy Stoots, DNP, RN, xG Health's general manager of EHR applications, offer a sneak preview of what xG Health will be presenting at HIMSS15, as well as issues and trends they see in the health IT industry. 2. When thinking of centers of health IT activity, images of Silicon Valley, New York City and Verona, Wis., likely come to mind. But perhaps missing from the list of health IT hotspots is the state of Georgia, which deems itself the nation's health IT capital. Solidifying its presence as the nation's health IT capital, Georgia will have the only state-level presence at the HIMSS15 Conference. Read more

3. Kansas City, Mo.-based Cerner, a founding member of industry interoperability coalition CommonWell Health Alliance, will feature many products that work toward interoperability, including its Substitutable Medical Applications & Reusable Technology and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources. Cerner representatives will also be available in Booth 913 to discuss interoperability strategies, local information exchanges that allow providers to refer patients to other practices and communicate their records, regional and organizational information exchanges and national information exchanges. 4. TeleTracking Technologies, a digital healthcare automation company, is bringing its full array of analytics, workflow automation and reporting to display at HIMSS15. The Pittsburgh-based company will operate out of its Command Center at Booth 7143 and show how its tracking technology works across an enterprise. Read more

5. Vocera Communications announced plans to focus on technologies to close the gaps in care coordination and deep system integration to improve communication and collaboration. The company will also demonstrate its Secure Texting application that allows providers to communicate via HIPAA-compliant text message, according to a news release. Read more

6. Leidos will feature optimization services, implementation consulting and IT strategic planning and professional services in meaningful use, ICD-10 and revenue cycle management. Experts will also be available to discuss health IT in support of federal health clients, including the Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services. The booth will also host a raffle for a Garmin vivofit, which will be drawn every hour during the exhibit hall hours. Read more
