HIMSS issues 6-point 'call to action' for interoperability

Jessica Kim Cohen -

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society released a "call to action" focused on nationwide interoperability Oct. 11.

The call to action comprises six guidelines to inform health policy for HHS and the broader health information and technology community. The HIMSS North America Board of Directors approved the call to action Oct. 6.

Here are the six actions HIMSS asked health IT stakeholders to take.

1. Integrate various interoperability approaches and exchange frameworks

2. Educate the health IT community on appropriate implementation of data standards and formats

3. Ensure participation from stakeholders from across the healthcare continuum, including caregivers and patients

4. Identify the "minimum necessary" business rules for information exchange to enhance patient care coordination

5. Standardize approaches to patient identity matching

6. Improve data usability to support patient care and medical research
