Highmark temporarily lays off 107 IT employees

Mackenzie Garrity -

In an effort to streamline and centralize operations, Highmark's information technology subsidiary HM Health Solutions furloughed 107 employees Nov. 4, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Officials from the Pittsburgh-based nonprofit healthcare company said the temporary layoffs were in the "best interest of our employees and customers."

In 2014, HM Health Solutions employed 2,020 people. In the following years, the IT company grew to 2,873. However, HM Health Solutions has had to lay off more staff than the number of employees the company has hired.

HM Health Solutions provides software infrastructure to support Blues health plans. This includes Highmark, which had around 10.3 million members in 2018, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
