HHS has awarded a total of $100,000 to six winners of its synthetic health data challenge on Sept. 21.
Synthetic heath data is artificial data created to mimic real-world data, according to a Sept. 21 news release shared with Becker's. It's used by researchers and health IT developers to test algorithms and other ideas when real clinical data isn't available.
Below are the winners of the challenge and their monetary awards.

- Medication Diversification Tool by Code Rx: $40,000. - Second place (two winners, awarded $15,000 each):
- Virtual Generalists: Monitoring Co-morbidities in Synthea by Generalistas
- On Improving Realism of Disease Modules in Synthea: Social Determinant-Based Enhancements to Conditional Transition Logic by LMI - Third place (three winners, awarded $10,000 each):
- The Necessity of Realistic Synthetic Health Data Development Environments by Particle Health
- Spatiotemporal Big Data Analysis of Opioid Epidemic in Illinois by UI Health
- Empirical Inference of Underlying Condition Probabilities Using Synthea Generated Synthetic Health Data by TeMa#1.
