HHS CIO estimates 500M hack attempts per week

Julie Spitzer -

HHS experiences roughly 500 million attempted cyberattacks each week, HHS CIO Beth Killoran said at the MarkLogic Data Integration Summit June 20 in Washington, D.C., according to fcw.com.

"Health data is the one thing about you that you can't change, and it's very powerful information, and the value of that data is going to go up," Ms. Killoran said, predicting the 500 million estimate to increase in the future, according to fcw.com.

HHS is looking to make better use of its data, in part by partnering with industry stakeholders to "put the tech at the fingertip so of [the] citizens," Ms. Killoran said, as reported by fcw.com. The department currently has one in every three Americans' personally identifiable information, according to Ms. Killoran.

"We have a responsibility to make sure that we're protecting citizens' information as they make it public and as they want to use that information to improve their health," she said, fcw.com reports.
