HHN names Most Wired hospitals of 2017

Julie Spitzer -

Hospitals & Health Networks published its 2017 "Health Care's Most Wired" list, honoring hospitals and health systems for their advances in technological practices.

The list is based on Hospitals & Health Networks' 19th Most Wired survey, which included 698 participants representing an estimated 2,158 hospitals and was conducted with the help of the American Hospital Association. It examined hospitals' adoption of technologies like secure messaging, telehealth and mobile app services to advance value-based care. The survey also considered hospitals' cybersecurity practices, EHR integration and population health tools. Each honoree was awarded one of four designations: advanced, innovative, most improved and small and rural.

This year marks the first time the survey asked respondents how quickly data could be restored if the system faced a data loss disaster, in which more than half (58 percent) said their clinical information systems would be available within four hours. Seventy percent of respondents added they have backup cloud-based services for their clinical data, up from 49 percent in 2015.

Most Wired hospitals also valued services like data security, with 97 percent of respondents deploying intrusion detection systems and nearly 90 percent running targeted phishing exercises to teach employees how to be proactive. They have also adopted technologies like secure messaging and telehealth, as well as data analytics training tools, predictive modeling and data-driven tools for decision-making.

However, Most Wired hospitals still cited problems integrating their EHR systems with third-party tools and external entities. Sixty-nine percent said they interface EHR data with population health management tools, while only half said they could incorporate data from entities like retail pharmacies.
