Health systems are moving to cloud from on-premises storage

Hospitals are beginning to store more patient data on cloud-based networks as tech giants like Microsoft, Google and Amazon continue to enhance cloud storage services, STAT News reports.

Three health systems currently using cloud:

1. Cleveland Clinic has worked with both Amazon Web Services as well as Google Cloud. The health system used Google's cloud-based application programming interface platform Apigee to create an app that allows iPhone users to access their personal data and communicate with physicians via their phone, STAT reports.

2. AWS recently invested $2 million in Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to study how artificial intelligence can simplify healthcare. The health system purchased AWS' cloud software in 2016 to ensure data accessibility in case of disasters.

3. Hackensack (N.J.) Meridian Health also recently integrated cloud services through its partnership with Microsoft Azure. The health system plans to use Microsoft's cloud computing platform to advance its hybrid cloud strategy, which uses a public-private cloud to securely transfer resources between platforms.
