Health researcher Stephen Friend leaves Apple in less than 2 years: 4 things to know

After just over a year with Apple's health team, prominent healthcare researcher Stephen Friend, MD, PhD, has left the company, CNBC reports.

Here are four things to know:

1. Dr. Friend specializes in healthcare strategy, especially in regards to creating open incentives and standards that benefit patients.

2. He joined Apple in 2016 to work on "health-related projects," according to CNBC. This was around the time Apple released its software frameworks — ResearchKit, CareKit and HealthKit — that were subject to security, privacy and consent standards, which Dr. Friend knows well.

3. Dr. Friend co-founded Sage Bionetworks, a nonprofit spinout of Merck & Co., where he also formerly served as senior vice president.

4. Additionally, he is a cancer researcher and has served on the faculty at Boston-based Harvard Medical School.
