Health IT tip of the day: Get a commonly used part of your website up to speed

Provider directories are the most frequently used part of most healthcare companies' websites. But they are also notoriously inaccurate.

Mike Simmons, CEO of CredSimple in New York: A 2014 study on provider directory accuracy and functionality concluded that most provider directories are not capable of helping patients find the right doctor for their condition or offer much help in booking an appointment. In fact, hospital directories only returned the correct specialty 38 percent of the time.

The most critical piece of publishing a useful provider directory is having good data and good knowledge about your provider base. Everything from credentials, to office hours, to panel status and specialty is important for your patients or end users. The patients aren't the only ones, however, that will benefit from having better provider data. Your provider network is the most valuable asset you have and it is critical to maintain robust information set on those providers so that you can manage the network appropriately.
