Health IT M&A Activity: MEDSEEK Acquires SymphonyCare, WebMD Acquires Avado

Staff -

Two recent acquisitions within the health IT market emphasize a growing focus on patient engagement technology.

MEDSEEK, a provider of software aimed at helping hospitals and health systems influence patient behavior, acquired SymphonyCare, a vendor of population health and care management solutions for an undisclosed sum.

The goal of the acquisition is to integrate SymphonyCare's population risk management, care management workflow and other functionalities into MEDSEEK's platform to provide an integrated solution to hospitals looking to increase patient engagement while managing population health.

In another acquisition designed to integrate patient engagement solutions, WebMD acquired Avado, a vendor of cloud-based software that allows patient-physician interaction, according to a TechCrunch report.

"The timing is right," WebMD CTO and COO Bill Pence told TechCrunch. "Traditionally, patients and healthcare providers have lived in separate silos, but with the growing adoption of electronic health records and mobile devices, coupled with the advance in sensor technology, there are now more opportunities than ever before to connect the two and offer personalized, direct-to-consumer services."

The deal, WebMD's first acquisition in five years, totaled between $20 and $30 million, sources close to the transaction told TechCrunch.
