Hartford HealthCare, Trinity, UConn form medtech accelerator

Andrea Park -

Hartford HealthCare and Trinity College, both in Hartford, Conn., along with the Mansfield-based University of Connecticut School of Business, will unveil a new health technology accelerator at a city hall meeting on April 24, according to The Hartford Business Journal.

The accelerator was reportedly created to bring new medtech startups to Hartford. Over the course of 12 weeks, the 10 chosen participants will receive advice and guidance from experts in developing and implementing a business strategy. The program will be operated by London-based Startupbootcamp, which oversees a network of accelerators, including Hartford's past insurance-focused InsurTech Hub program.

A previous proposal for a medtech accelerator in the city outlined the establishment of a biomedical innovation institute within Hartford Hospital's Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation. Though such an institute is no longer part of the plan, CESI will reportedly play a role in testing some of the products developed in the program.

Approximately $942,000 in funding allocated to developing the medtech accelerator comes from CTNext, an entrepreneurial ecosystem funded by the state; Hartford HealthCare will contribute $500,000 and Trinity College will donate $75,000 and a 4,000-square-foot workspace in downtown Hartford. Additionally, Hartford HealthCare CEO Elliot Joseph told the Journal the health system might invest even more in promising startups within the accelerator.
