Hackensack Meridian Health taps IBM Watson, Cota for oncology decision support

Julie Spitzer -

Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health on June 2 joined forces with IBM Watson Health and Cota Healthcare to pilot new clinical decision support technology.

Hackensack Meridian Health will bring real-world outcomes data from Cota into Watson for Oncology to improve cancer treatments and reduce costs to patients. Oncologists at the health system will use Cota to derive benchmark data and embed patient classification into Watson for Oncology to contextualize treatment planning. They will also use Watson for Oncology to identify and rank treatment options.

"With the transition to value-based care, health systems are under increased pressure to provide accountable, high-quality care while keeping costs low," said Andrew Pecora, MD, founder and executive chairman of Cota and chief innovations officer of Hackensack Meridian Health. "But clinicians lack the resources that can help them identify optimal treatment options at the point of care, limiting their ability to achieve value."

Ten oncologists and as many as 500 patients will have access to the pilot through the end of October. The second phase of the pilot will feature evidence-based treatment recommendations and care paths coupled with payment assignments.
