Google to study how people interact with AI

Jessica Kim Cohen -

Google launched a new research initiative — called "People + AI Research," or PAIR — July 10, senior research scientists wrote in a company blog post.

PAIR will bring together researchers from across the company to "focus on the 'human side' of AI: the relationship between users and technology, the new applications it enables and how to make it broadly inclusive," Martin Wattenberg, PhD, and Fernanda Viégas, PhD, senior staff research scientists in Google's brain team, wrote in the blog post.

The researchers involved with the project will "redesign" how people interact with AI systems by publishing research, releasing open-source tools and creating AI guidelines. PAIR's efforts will focus on three primary stakeholders: engineers, professional experts and everyday users.

"[We] believe AI can go much further — and be more useful to all of us — if we build systems with people in mind at the start of the process," the researchers wrote.
