Google, Smart Patients vet Roni Zeiger is Facebook's new head of health strategy

Andrea Park -

Roni Zeiger, MD, who served as Google's chief health strategist for six years, is joining Facebook as head of health strategy, he announced in a blog post on May 23.

"I can't resist the opportunity to help improve Health Support Groups and the quality of health information across Facebook," Dr. Zeiger wrote. "Needless to say, there are tremendous challenges to address, as well as many opportunities for meaningful impact. I will tap into the power of community and collaboration to do my best."

After leaving Google in 2012, Dr. Zeiger co-founded the Smart Patients online healthcare community with a two-pronged goal of empowering patients to take control of their health and using that knowledge to inform the work of healthcare providers and pharmaceutical companies. He will continue those efforts at Facebook, writing in his post that he will be "doubling down on [his] commitment to peer support."
