Google's think tank rebrands as tech incubator Jigsaw

Staff -

Google Ideas, the technology company's think tank, is sporting a new name: Jigsaw.

The think tank, which previously existed within Google, will also relaunch as a standalone technology incubator under the company's restructured and rebranded Alphabet conglomerate, reports Venture Beat.

In a Medium post announcing the name change, Alphabet Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said the Jigsaw team will focus on using technology to address "the toughest geopolitical challenges, from countering violent extremism to thwarting online censorship to mitigating the threats associated with digital attacks."

As for the new name, Mr. Schmidt wrote it represents the complexity of physical and digital challenges, and it affirms the company's belief that collaboration is the best way to solve problems.

"The world is as complex as ever, but we believe that a unique combination of principled research and technology expertise can help put the puzzle together — one piece at a time," Mr. Schmidt wrote.
