Google's 6 most recent hospital hires

Julie Spitzer -

Hospital and healthcare executives are increasingly moving to Silicon Valley, founding startups, joining big tech's boards of directors and advising a range of firms.

Of all the companies to choose from, Google is seemingly one of the most attractive option for these experts, STAT reports.

Here are six healthcare executives that have recently joined Google or one of its sister companies, either as an advisor or a full-time team member. This list is not exhaustive:

1. Dimitri Azar, MD: The former head of Chicago-based University of Illinois' ophthalmology department is now the clinical lead for ophthalmology programs at Alphabet's life sciences arm Verily.

2. Jessica Mega, MD: While also serving as a cardiologist at Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dr. Mega is Verily's chief medical and scientific officer.

3. Gregory Moore, MD, PhD: The former chief of emerging technology and informatics officer at Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger serves at the vice president of Google Cloud's healthcare and life sciences division.

4. Michael Howell, MD: The former chief quality officer of University of Chicago Medicine and director of the UChicago Medicine Center for Healthcare Delivery Science and Innovation joined Google Research as the division's chief clinical strategist.

5. Toby Cosgrove, MD: The former President and CEO of Cleveland Clinic joined the Google Cloud team as an executive adviser to its healthcare and life sciences divisions.

6. Vivian Lee, MD, PhD: The former CEO of Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Health Care joined Verily as president of health platforms in May about one year after she resigned from the health system.

Other prominent healthcare hires include former Director for the National Institute of Mental Health Thomas Insel, MD, who briefly worked at Verily before founding the Silicon Valley startup Mindstrong Health, and Robert Califf, MD, the former FDA commissioner who joined Verily as an advisor and advisory board member shortly after leaving the agency at the end of the Obama administration.
