Google is developing AI to do more with 'much less data'

Andrea Park -

Though Facebook's vice president of artificial intelligence predicted researchers attempting to scale AI solutions will soon "hit the wall," the head of Google's AI research group recently countered with many ways to get through, over and around that wall.

In an interview with Wired, Google's Jeff Dean, PhD, said that much of AI's potential will come from building larger and more efficient computer systems and translating the research of the past decade into real-world uses, including in healthcare, where Dr. Dean said Google is doing "a fair amount of work."

"But we also are looking at what are the next major problems on the horizon, given what we can do today and what we can't do," he continued. "We want to build systems that can generalize to a new task. Being able to do things with much less data and with much less computation is going to be interesting and important."
