Google Cloud to support radiology research with new partnership: 5 things to know

Google Cloud entered into a partnership with Flywheel to provide clinical researchers with cloud technology for medical imaging research.

Five things to know:

1. Flywheel, a provider of cloud-based tools for biomedical research, will integrate Google's Cloud Healthcare Application Programming Interface into its platform.

2. As part of the new collaboration, Flywheel will use Google Cloud's BigQuery platform to enable scalable analysis of medical imaging metadata, biomarker data and tabular data, including genomics. Additionally, researchers on Flywheel's platform will be able to tap into Google's Cloud AutoML Vision API to design a comprehensive learning workflow for artificial intelligence models that use medical imaging data.

3. Flywheel's platform, which was developed to capture multimodality images and data, also allows researchers to collaborate with peers to manage meta-data for publications and grant writing.

4. The new platform offers support for various data standards, including Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine, Health Level 7 and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources.

5. Travis Richardson, Flywheel CEO, said in a news release: "With our partners at Google Cloud, we are delivering an innovative research platform to meet the needs of imaging center directors, principal investigators and clinical research institutions seeking to establish a scalable infrastructure for machine learning, advanced imaging research and secure collaboration to advance science, and ultimately, precision medicine."
