GE Healthcare to hire 5k software engineers

Jessica Kim Cohen -

GE Healthcare plans to hire 5,000 software engineers and invest $500 million in its software development over the next few years, according to Business Insider.

The division currently employs roughly 5,000 engineers, or 10 percent of the company's total staff. This commitment represents a shift in GE Healthcare's strategy, which has traditionally focused on hardware, according to Business Insider.

The new hires will help GE Healthcare build an app store on GE's cloud-based platform, so that the company's software engineers and other collaborating organizations can build medical apps.

"We'll be hiring software engineers, data analysts, imaging analysts, to develop our own apps, but also to develop the platform and the capability of the platform to host hundreds of other applications," GE Healthcare CEO John Flannery told Business Insider.
