Gartner report: Skills, budgets pose barriers to CIO success

CIOs report similar barriers to industry success, according to the 2017 Gartner CIO Agenda Report.

Gartner surveyed 2,598 CIOs from 93 countries, whom they divided into three categories: top performers (162 CIOs), typical performers (1,976 CIOs) and trailing performers (160 CIOs). Skills/resources and funding/budgets were the top two categories for all performance groups.

Here are the top five factors top performing CIOs reported as barriers to success:

1. Skills, resources: 27 percent of top performers (compared to 26 percent of typical performers, 22 percent of trailing performers)

2. Funding, budgets: 19 percent of top performers (compared to 17 percent of typical performers, 16 percent of trailing performers)

3. Management sponsorship, relationships: 10 percent of top performers (compared to 8 percent of typical performers, 16 percent of trailing performers)

4. Technology challenges (legacy, security): 8 percent of top performers (compared to 5 percent of typical performers, 3 percent of trailing performers)

5. IT-business alignment: 6 percent of top performers (compared to 5 percent of typical performers, 3 percent of trialing performers)
