The Health Care Cost Institute added former U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra to its governing board, the Washington, D.C.-based research organization announced March 14.

Mr. Chopra served as the first U.S. chief technology officer, and was appointed to the role by former President Barack Obama in 2009. Today, he serves as the president of CareJourney, a healthcare analytics company focused on population health.

In 2014, Mr. Chopra published the book Innovative State: How New Technologies Can Transform Government.

The Health Care Cost Institute, established in 2011, promotes independent nonpartisan research and analysis on the causes of rising health spending the U.S.

Along with Mr. Chopra, the Health Care Cost Institute also welcomed Michael E. Chernew, PhD, a health policy professor at Boston-based Harvard Medical School, and Aaron McKethan, PhD, chief data officer for North Carolina's health and human services department, to its governing board in March.

"These individuals will diversify and complement our existing board members, and help HCCI to reach its potential to provide data and analyses that contribute to policies that reduce health care costs, improve healthcare quality, increase access to care and create a sustainable healthcare system," Health Care Cost Institute President and Executive Director Niall Brennan said in a March 14 statement.
