Vindell Washington, MD, has joined Verily as chief clinical officer of the Google sister company's health platforms team, according to tweets from Karen DeSalvo, MD, Google's chief health officer, and Carolyn Wang, Verily's communications lead.

Dr. Washington moves to Verily, Alphabet's life sciences arm, following more than two years as chief medical officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. Prior to that, he served as the HHS' national coordinator for health IT, a role he took over from Dr. DeSalvo, who joined Google in December 2019.

At Verily, Dr. Washington will be joining a team headed by Vivian Lee, MD, PhD, former senior vice president for health sciences, medical school dean and CEO of University of Utah Health in Salt Lake City. According to Dr. Lee's company bio, the health platforms team works alongside Verily's clinical and engineering groups to "develop products and platforms that can support health system improvement and advance population health."

One recently announced project led by Dr. Lee and the health platforms team, for example, saw Verily partner with the VA Palo Alto (Calif.) Health Care System and Newton, Mass.-based Atrius Health to use data to address various challenges in population health and care delivery.
