Verily — Alphabet's life sciences division — on Wednesday hired former Food and Drug Administrator Commissioner Robert Califf, MD, as an advisor, reports CNBC.

Dr. Califf will offer guidance for Project Baseline, which aims to collect and organize health data for 10,000 people over four years to create a well-defined reference — or "baseline" — of good health. In a blog post on Verily's website, Dr. Califf said he was involved with the project early on, but distanced himself from it once he stepped into his role at the FDA.

Dr. Califf will also continue existing work with the Duke University Clinical Research Institute in Durham, N.C., and serve as an adjunct professor in the Department of Medicine at Stanford (Calif.) University, according to the report. Both Duke and Stanford are collaborating with Verily for the Baseline Project.
