Federal agencies report 321 ransomware-related incidents since July

In the past nine months, 29 federal agencies have reported 321 ransomware-related activity, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The Hill reported on DHS' announcement, saying none of the ransomware-related incidents led to a payment because the ransomware never successfully locked the government's network.

However, since 2005, the Justice Department's InternetCrimeComplaintCenter has reported nearly 7,700 ransomware complaints in which victims paid a total of $57 million in ransom payments, reports The Hill. While that is a significant number, the DOJ indicates even more ransomware events have occurred and more dollars have been exchanged because organizations often do not report ransomware incidents.
