FDA clears AI-powered, cloud-based heart murmur detection system

A mobile system that uses advanced machine learning to identify heart murmurs and connects to the cloud has been cleared by the FDA, Canadian health tech company eMurmur announced on May 7.

The HIPAA-compliant eMurmur ID program sends readings from a smartphone-connected electronic stethoscope to the cloud for artificial intelligence-powered analysis. Within seconds, users receive results in the eMurmur app, which also transmits the information to a web portal where physicians can access the recordings and results.

The program is capable of identifying pathologic and physiologic heart murmurs, S1 and S2 heart sounds and the absence of a heart murmur. Following multiple clinical studies, eMurmur ID has shown an accuracy rate of over 85 percent.
