Epic partners with Humana & 16 other health IT key notes

Here's the latest roundup of stories about 17 health information technology companies, including Allscripts, Epic and Google.

1. Florida law firm Morgan & Morgan filed a class-action lawsuit on June 12 in New Jersey against Quest Diagnostics after the laboratory testing company disclosed that it had experienced a data breach that exposed 11.9 million patients.

2. IBM released its inaugural list of 40 women around the world who are pioneering the use of artificial intelligence in their industries, including two from the healthcare sector.

3. Dassault Systemes, a French technology company, will acquire healthcare software company Medidata for $5.8 billion.

4. Facebook rolled out its new Blood Donations feature in select U.S. cities June 11 to help people locate blood banks in need of donors.

5. Nebula Genomics announced June 11 its partnership with EMD Serono, the biopharmaceutical business of Merck KGaA in Darmstadt, Germany, for a pilot project aimed at developing new medicines.

6. Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center migrated to Google Cloud's platform to expand access to patients' unstructured health data.

7. Vonage, a business communications provider, has partnered with Pulsara, a healthcare mobile communications platform, to enhance mobile telehealth offerings.

8. Microsoft plans to integrate new blockchain and artificial intelligence features into its Power Platform, the company announced June 10.

9. Electronic health records provider Epic and health insurer Humana have teamed up to improve patient and provider communication as well as access to health information.

10. Veradigm, Allscripts' payer and life sciences division, will integrate its technology and analytics abilities with the American College of Cardiology's outpatient national quality improvement registry to create an ambulatory chronic disease network.

11. One hundred and sixty-three 500+-bed hospitals purchased an Epic EMR last year, according to a recent KLAS Research report.

12. Louisville, Ky., Mayor Greg Fischer announced June 7 that the city has formed an "AI Innovation Digital Alliance" with Microsoft to provide support to the local healthcare and manufacturing industries as they implement artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.

13. Microsoft is working with Seattle Children's Research Institute to build a genomics database that will help reduce the number of sudden infant death syndrome cases.

14. To gain a better understanding of the healthcare industry and how to help support patient and physicians' needs, Google partnered with Harvard Medical School in 2015 to develop and implement an education program for the technology giant's employees.

15. Blockchain developer Solve.Care plans to release a network for diabetic patients in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals and the Arizona Care Network.

16. Opko Health is the third healthcare company to learn its patients were affected in the American Medical Collection Agency data breach.

17. A federal judge tossed out a class-action lawsuit against EHR vendor Allscripts on June 4 over a ransomware attack that left several of its hospital clients unable to access their EHRs last year.
