Epic and Cerner: 8 key points about company growth

As the digital revolution in healthcare moves forward, vendors are working to keep supply up to pace with the growing demand.

Epic and Cerner are two vendors sitting in the center of the IT shift, and in an environment seeking more and more from IT, these two are stepping up to deliver and growing in the process.

Here are eight things to know about Epic's and Cerner's growth as companies.

1. From a strictly financial level, Cerner is posting positive gains in revenue. In fiscal year 2014, Cerner reported $3.4 billion in revenue, up 17 percent from the previous year's $2.9 billoin.

2. Epic remains privately held, so full financial and shareholder information isn't available, but Forbes indicates the company's 2014 revenue totaled $1.8 billion.

3. Both vendors have a growing international presence. Epic is currently working with its first client in the United Kindom, implementing its EHR at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The vendor has offices in Dubai, Singapore, Denmark and the Netherlands.

4. Cerner reports having systems in more than 18,000 facilities around the world, with approximately 400 facilities outside the U.S. using Cerner's Millennium EHR.

5. Some notable recent contracts for Cerner include Phoenix-based Banner Health selecting Cerner's EHR to replace Epic's EHR at two recently acquired hospitals that used to be part of the former University of Arizona Health Network. Additionally, Danville, Pa.-based Geisigner Health recently announced it had selected Cerner's population health management platform to advance its population health initiatives.

6. Recent Epic contracts include Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic and Boston-based Partners HealthCare, the latter of which started its go-live process in June.

7. In addition to clientele and finances, both Cerner and Epic's growth is reflected in office space, as both companies are adding onto their campuses. In January, Epic announced it was expanding its campus to add five buildings totaling 500,000 square feet of office space.

8. In July, Cerner began construction on two new office buildings at the vendor's new Trails Campus, which will include 4.7 million square feet of space in 16 buildings.
