Suneel Gupta, founder of Rise Labs, a digital health company that provides one-on-one personal diet coaching on a mobile platform, announced he is running for Michigan's 11th Congressional district.
The seat is currently held by Rep. Dave Trott, R-Mich., who said in September he does not plan to seek re-election. Mr. Gupta is running as a Democrat on a platform of keeping and creating jobs in the state.
"I'm not a politician; I'm an entrepreneur," he said in a campaign video on his website. "I've created good paying jobs and balanced budgets. I know how to get this done."
Mr. Gupta is the younger brother of CNN's chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, MD, who is also a practicing neurosurgeon. His startup Rise has been touted by former First Lady Michelle Obama, who partnered with the company in 2016 to bring health coaching to low-income communities across the U.S. Rise has since by acquired by One Medical, a San Francisco-based company.
