Data Breach at La Palma Intercommunity Hospital

Ayla Ellison -

La Palma (Calif.) Intercommunity Hospital has notified patients their medical records and personal information were illegally viewed by a former employee of the hospital.

The hospital learned in September 2012 an employee had accessed patients' personal and health information without permission. The employee accessed the patients' Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, addresses, birth dates and medical information, according to an Orange County Register report.

The employee who accessed the patients' information violated multiple hospital policies and was terminated, according to the report.

As a result of the data breach, La Palma Intercommunity Hospital is offering free credit monitoring to affected patients, according to the report.

It is still unclear how many patients were affected by this incident, and the hospital declined to comment about the data breach.
