Employees' personal information has been used by fraudsters to electronically file phony income tax returns in an identity theft scheme, according to the report.
UPMC has set up a hotline to help employees work through the issues they are experiencing as a result of the data breach and has hired a tax firm to work with affected employees.
On Feb. 27, a lawsuit was filed against UPMC in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, alleging that UPMC failed to disclose the data breach in a timely manner and failed to adequately protect employee information.
