Connecticut launches online tool to compare cost, quality of local hospitals

Andrea Park -

Connecticut's state Office of Health Strategy launched Healthscore CT, an interactive digital tool to help residents compare the price and quality of care at hospitals and health systems across the state.

Healthscore CT comprises a quality scorecard and a cost estimator. The scorecard was funded by a $45 million grant from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation and uses a five-star system to rate each organization based on 30 measures spanning care delivery and consumer experience. The cost estimator, due to be released by the end of September, will compile data from the All-Payer Claims Database to show users the cost of a specific procedure at each hospital.

Patients, providers and business owners will be able to search, sort and filter Healthscore CT's datasets by parameters of their choice, including quality measure, health condition, prices and rating of local facilities. As such, according to OHS Executive Director Victoria Veltri, the free resource will not only help patients make more informed decisions about their care, but can also aid providers in improving the cost and quality of their care delivery.
