CMS: Hospitals May Need EHR Navigator for State Surveys

CMS has issued a memo advising hospitals they may be required to provide an electronic health record "navigator" during state surveys.

State Survey Agency may request the navigator, an experienced user of the hospital's EHR system, to help the surveyors access electronic records.

"Providing such assistance is analogous to the traditional expectation for paper-based records that hospitals and critical access hospitals retrieve closed paper medical records requested by surveyors, and hospitals/CAHs are expected to provide the necessary assistance to enable surveyors to review EHRs," according to the memo.
