Cigna to expand AI-enabled medication management solution

An artificial intelligence system that tracks chronic disease treatment will soon be available to all Cigna and Express Scripts employer clients, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Health Connect 360 relies on medical, pharmacy, lab and biometric data and analytics tools from both Cigna and Express Scripts to track patients' medication adherence, trigger alerts regarding health data and missed medications, and offer personalized recommendations to address any gaps in care. This information can also be automatically fed into EHR systems.

The service has already been rolled out to some Express Scripts customers this year and will be available in January to all Cigna and Express Scripts customers offering employee health benefits. Employees with chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, pain management and more, can access the dashboard via smartphone or web browser to receive AI-enabled, data-driven monitoring of their treatment plans.

Mark Boxer, Cigna's CIO, told WSJ that access to data and corresponding analytics tools were a primary driver of the company's 2018 acquisition of Express Scripts. "It was much more than just simply buying a pharmacy benefits management [company]. It was buying a set of care management capabilities, and access to data and intelligence that would be very, very hard to replicate," he said.
