CHIME ends patient ID challenge after almost 2 years

Jessica Kim Cohen -

CHIME Healthcare Innovation Trust, an affiliate of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, suspended its National Patient Identification Challenge, the association announced Nov. 15.

CHIME Healthcare Innovation Trust launched the National Patient Identification Challenge as a year-long competition Jan. 19, 2016. Under the challenge, CHIME invited health IT innovators to submit solutions that accurately matched patients to their medical records. At the time, CHIME said the winning solution would receive $1 million.

"Though we've made great progress and moved the industry forward in many ways through the challenge, we ultimately did not achieve the results we sought to this complex problem," said Russell Branzell, president and CEO of CHIME. "We decided the best course for addressing this patient safety hazard is to redirect our attention and resources to another strategy."

As its next step to advance patient identification, CHIME officials said CHIME Healthcare Innovation Trust would assist in developing a Patient Identification Task Force. The task force will work toward developing a national solution that "accurately identifies a patient 100 percent of the time," according to CHIME officials.
