A new interactive chart from athenahealth's athenaInsight takes a closer look at trends in behavioral health throughout the United States.
The chart represents data from more than 100 million patient encounters and 80,000 providers across the country.
Users can view the data in a variety of ways. They can select one or two behavioral health diagnoses from a list of four: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression and insomnia. They can also sort the patients based on gender, age group, insurance type and race/ethnicity. Finally, users can sort the data based on number of patients or number of visits.
Here are six key findings from the chart.
1. Female patients are two times more likely than male patients to be diagnosed with anxiety, depression or both.
2. Individuals with ADHD and/or anxiety make up 37.8 percent of all visits by 21- to 34-year-olds.
3. White patients are approximately two times more likely to be diagnosed with depression compared to patients of other races and ethnicities.
4. While only 2.3 percent of patients between the ages of 14 and 20 are diagnosed with insomnia, one in every seven patients aged 50 and over is diagnosed with insomnia.
5. Patients who are uninsured or use Medicare have the highest rates of depression compared to patients on commercial insurance or Medicaid.
6. White patients are approximately two times more likely to have anxiety compared to patients of other races and ethnicities. Patients who declined to share their race/ethnicity had the second highest rates of anxiety.
